Album Background

The Songs
In 2011, Andrew experienced a marriage break up and divorce. That period of intense heartbreak was the crucible from which most of these songs were written.
Andrew: “Most of the songs in the album were literally downloaded into my brain within seconds.
It was as if I heard the entire piece - lyrics, music, and orchestration all at once, like a live performance. Then it was a mad rush at my piano to write it all down before the memory faded. I guess I owe thanks to my ex-wife for without our brokenness, these songs would not exist.”
While the creation of the songs occurred in mere minutes, the crafting of each song, each track, each tilt and texture took a lot longer. The songs sat hidden away for over a decade until early July 2023 the inspiration re-fired and the songs were resurrected into the form you hear today.
Andrew: “It was mid-winter, days of cold rainstorms and dark frosts. I was recovering from a nasty chest infection and messing around on the piano when I remembered one of my songs and started to play it. It sounded quite good, so over the next few days I perfected the song and tightened up the lyrics.”
Then Andrew found the other songs and re-imagined them; in no particular order, just as the mood and inspiration bubbled up. From basic piano pieces to workable tracks filled the next four months. His old but robust Korg is35 Interactive Digital Workstation came in super handy as the arrangements Andrew found and programmed suited his songs perfectly. These arrangements formed the basis of the eventual studio versions. But first was mastering a home demo, then searching for a studio - one that fitted Andrew’s vision and purpose.Interested? Recording began in February 2025 and was done in stages as money and time allowed. Mastering took place over 3 days in November 2025, then some remixing and re-arranging followed. The album was signed off in January 2026.
In Andrew’s words: “David at Tsunami Studios has been an inspiration. He accurately interpreted my songs, contributing with rhythm and acoustic guitar, bass and drums. He also co-wrote some of the string arrangements. At times a guide and mentor, at times a sounding-board, his forty-plus years of expert knowledge has been invaluable to the final outcome. The recording experience while intense and lots of hard work, sweat and late nights, was amazing and totally rewarding. To bring each song to life and have them sounding like the first time I heard them inside my head has been epiphanal.”Interested? Get in touch! Contact UsThe production
The front CD graphics and main logo were developed in November 2023, based on a brief provided to Beka. Andrew wanted an image to embody the “Stars Collide” theme, representing a female figure looking lost out of love, broody and emotive, with a nebulae in-place of the iris in her eye. Further ideas were developed in early 2024, as the whole album concept began to be shaped. At that time a recording studio was approached and formative recording was done there, to get a feel for the project. Unfortunately none of that studio work was usable in the later recording process. The experience however was pivotal into choosing the right studio and engineer to get the project operational.
As time went on over 2025 during the actual recording, the album began to coalesce into what it is today. It took the skills of two further graphic designers to complete the task, with Andrew’s input along the way.

About

About Droid City
In High School during the 80’s Andrew nicknamed himself Android as a whim, and dreamed up a bunch of different corporations with Android in the title. As a teenager, he was interested in electronics, robotics, computers and electronic music, so no surprises there.
Later, Ralph, a workmate at the time called Andrew “Droid”. Ralph became a dear friend, church pastor and mentor to Andrew, until his untimely death in 2024.
In Andrew’s words: “while arranging the songs in 2023, I thought about what to call my musical projects. I had been a fan of Owl City/Adam Young who felt like a similar character to me. So I combined Droid and City, and it seemed to work. Droid City embodies who I am, and the place that my music evolves from."About Andrew
Andrew began learning piano from age six, getting as far as Grade 6. A church organist and pianist from the age of twelve, church worship leader, pianist and pipe organist from his early twenty’s onwards. Sound bites from all Ten Album Tracks

Track 1. In Your Eyes - When you’ve found your truest soulmate, when you're lost in their eyes like the stars colliding, and nothing else matters in life.

Track 2. Sandcastles - That moment when you fall for someone, when you build dreams and fantasies around them. Yet they don’t even know you exist, or do they?

Track 3. Fallout - When it all falls apart and the fallout is all-consuming. You have more questions than answers. Is redemption possible? And can you make sense of the insensible?

Track 4. What is Love - We’ve all been there, asking the deeper questions. Reflecting on what might have been, wishing we understood love that little bit better.

Track 5. In the Rain - When it’s all over, and despite having lived your best years, now you stand alone in the rain. Life is full of conundrums, it used to be so good, now the rain never ceases and there’s nothing you can do.

Track 6. Sometime - Reflecting on the beauty, adventure and joy of love. Though now lost, it once existed sometime long ago, and maybe, just maybe with hope and a prayer, it returns.

Track 7. What About Us - Looking back at all the things you miss about the other when they’re gone; but with a glimmer of hope that someday, some way there’s a comeback.

Track 8. Time to Stand Still - We all need to be heard, to be seen, to be given space. A moment is enough, but if only time could stand still.

Track 9. In My Dreams - Falling in love isn’t always straightforward; it’s often rocky, uncertain, confusing. They’re in your dreams, but are you in theirs?

Track 10. Hold On - A song of hope, for life and love to return; and of faith that the answers are not that far away. Look for hope, it may be elusive, but it is always there. Just behind, just beside.
